Our fave Notting Hill accommodations are found at the Gate Hotel (perched at the foot of Portobello Road), where we've bunked twice, once in the mid-'90s. Inside you find steep stairs, small loos and convenient mini-fridges. Alas, there's no longer a house parrot kept downstairs, but thankfully new proprietors don't smoke. On the way to the Gate, we grabbed takeout at quirky Italian cafe Arancina on Pembridge Road. South of Notting Hill Gate Tube is famous fish 'n' chippie Geales, recently upscaled and totted up (had a long, chummy chat with fellow Americans at next table). Related videos: a snowy view, watching The Rapiers' Walkers Crisp advert, and a quick walk to Tube.
NB: Catching The Rapiers' 25th Anniversary celebrations at the Amersham Rock 'n' Roll Club prompted this week's English holiday, our shortest together. See those swell rock 'n' roll details on Rapiers Are Go!
